The photo, taken with a mobile phone, shows 18-year-old Cortez Berry tied up in a leash that is held by two other inmates.It was taken in the Burruss Correctional Training Centre in Georgia, US, and was originally posted on the Facebook page of radio programme The Austin Rhodes Show.
The disturbing image has now been shared more than 4,500 times and has sparked widespread debate about abuse at the prison.
Berry's mum Demetria Harris said he was beaten by a group of 10 other inmates after refusing to join a gang.
She said: "I'm afraid for his life.
"When I try to lay down to sleep I see it in my sleep."
Berry is currently serving an eight-year sentence for robbery, theft of a motor vehicle and aggravated assault which he committed when aggravated assault which he committed when he was 14
